Edouard Mendy has hailed his ‘absolutely remarkable’ save to deny Liverpool’s Sadio Mane as Thomas Tuchel is praised for bringing the Chelsea goalkeeper back to the squad for the Carabao Cup final

Edouard Mendy has shown exactly why he was brought back into Chelsea’s squad for the Carabao Cup final as he made an incredible start to deny Liverpool star Sadio Mane.

The Reds looked set to take the lead at Wembley as Mane reacted quickest to Mendy stepping to his right to deny Naby Keita from a distance.

But somehow the net didn’t swell as Mendy rose brilliantly to deny his Senegalese teammate’s effort on the rebound.

Reacting to the save, Ally McCoist said during live commentary for talkSPORT: “I think it’s as good as anything I’ve seen anywhere at any level at any time, honestly!

“His first save, where he goes down to his right side, is a great save, but the way he gets up and makes Mane’s second save is absolutely remarkable.”

Kepa Arrizabalaga is Chelsea’s designated cup goalkeeper, however, Thomas Tuchel opted to bring Mendy back for the final.

The stoppage upholds Tuchel’s decision, says talkSPORT’s Andy Townsend.

Townsend added: “In a nutshell, it justified exactly why Thomas Tuchel did what he did because it was just amazing work by Edouard Mendy, a brilliant goalkeeper.”

The final is currently scoreless but the opportunities are certainly not lacking.

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic was denied at close range by Caoimhin Kelleher, while Mane minted a free header after being picked off by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Mason Mount flew wide just before the break and should have given Chelsea the lead in the 49th minute when he found space in the Liverpool penalty area, but his effort hit the post.
