Driver crashes into church, flees with bumper


CLEVELAND — A driver who crashed into a church on the east side of Cleveland on Friday morning fled with the car’s bumper and license plate still attached and hid it behind a dumpster, police say .

Officers and firefighters responded to Wilson United Methodist Church, 9226 St. Clair Avenue, for a car in a building. According to an officer at the scene, the speedometer was stuck at 90 mph.

A witness told officers that the driver was trying to remove the license plate from the rear bumper but was unable to remove only the plate so he drove off with the bumper and hid it behind a dumpster.

Police, guided perhaps by divine intervention, located the bumper and plate behind the dumpster.

The crash caused damage to church windows, the building and the perimeter fence.
