Driver arrested in death of wheelchair user in Long Beach

Long Beach Police arrested a man who allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol when his car struck and killed a wheelchair pedestrian on Saturday night.

Joseph Maez, 26, of Long Beach was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and manslaughter while intoxicated, police said. He was being held on $ 100,000 bond.

Responding to an accident at around 11:19 p.m., officers attempted to save lives on the pedestrian until staff from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and continued their efforts to resuscitate him. The pedestrian died instantly. His identity was withheld until the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office notified the next of kin.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the man in the wheelchair was pushing his things into a shopping cart in an unmarked crosswalk on Radnor Avenue when Maez’s 2016 Honda Civic, traveling westbound on Stearns Street, struck him.
