Drew Barrymore opens up about 13-year-old ‘psychiatric ward’ experience
Barrymore said that as a child actress she was crazy about “too many resources” and a mother who wanted to be her friend instead of her mother.

“I was going to clubs and not going to school and I was stealing my mom’s car and, you know, I was out of control. So, you know, sometimes it was as funny as that and sometimes I was so angry that I would go, ”she said, explaining that“ the thing ”was a“ full psychiatric ward ”where she went. was placed for 18 months.

Barrymore said it was not a cushy rehab experience.

“I used to laugh at places like Malibu for 30 days. Malibu was sort of the opposite of my experience, ”she recalls. “You couldn’t mess around in there and if you did you would be thrown into a padded room or put in stretchers and tied up.”

Barrymore said she was so angry that she “couldn’t see clearly” and couldn’t understand why she was being punished so severely.

“I wondered why this was happening. And I thought, maybe you need the craziest form of structure because everything was so accessible and fucked up in your world that it might take something thing like that so you can start the rest of your life, ”she says.“ And that hasn’t happened for about six to eight months. The first six to eight months I was so angry. I couldn’t see clearly. “

Through therapy and soul-searching, Barrymore said she forgave her mother and didn’t want her to live in pain.

She added that the two were in touch and had actually texted Monday morning before the interview.
