Drew Barrymore Defends Hugh Grant’s ‘Grumpy’ Oscars Red Carpet Interview With Ashley Graham

Drew Barrymore is alongside his friend Hugh Grant.

After the British actor was heavily criticized for his viral interview with model Ashley Graham, Barrymore is defending his ‘Music and Lyrics’ co-star.

“If you know Hugh, that’s his way of loving you,” Barrymore explained on his talk show, “The Drew Barrymore Show.”

“People are like, ‘Oh, he’s so grumpy and she’s so thrown off.’ I’m like, ‘No, it’s Hugh Grant. You think you get this lovely movie star and what you really get is grumpy Hugh. And then you fall in love with grumpy Hugh.'”

Barrymore advised others not to take Grant’s cheeky remarks too personally and suggested he was using humor with his responses.

“When he says that, I tell you, he’s absolutely funny. He doesn’t mean anything negative about it. The person Ashley Graham met on that mat is the real Hugh,” Barrymore continued.

The ‘Charlie’s Angels’ alum admitted that during her first exchange with Grant, it took a while to get used to his characteristics, as she kept insisting that his comments were harmless.

“Probably like Ashley Graham on the mat, like, ‘Who am I dealing with?’ And then I was like, “Oh, no, I love you. I want to love you. You don’t let me love you,” Barrymore remarked.

“When I got to know him, I was like, ‘I really love you. I love you for the real you.’ He’s a hilarious, good human being.”

The 48-year-old actress’ comments follow Grant’s awkward interview with Graham on the Oscars red carpet.

Throughout the short red carpet interview, Grant gave some brief answers.

When she tried to ask him if he was thrilled to see a particular person win an award, he replied, “Nobody in particular,” and when she asked the age-old question of the event, “What are you wearing?” he simply replied with “My costume”.

Graham mentioned her appearance in the popular movie “Green Onion,” and he told her “I’m barely there, I’m there for about three seconds.” In an attempt to continue the interview, she asked him if he was still having fun with the experience, to which he replied, “Almost.”

Viewers quickly took to Twitter to criticize his behavior during the interview.

“Is Hugh Grant just a d— cocky all the time?” asked a commentator. “He was so rude to Ashley Graham on the red carpet, eye rolling. Maybe he should stay home if he’s too good for his chosen industry.”
