Dozens reportedly dead, state lawmaker says: NPR

ABUJA, Nigeria — Gunmen opened fire on worshipers at a Catholic church in southwestern Nigeria on Sunday and also detonated explosives, a state lawmaker said. The death of dozens of people, including children, was feared.

Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole said the attackers targeted St. Francis Catholic Church in Ondo state just as worshipers were gathering on Pentecost Sunday.

Among the dead were many children, said Oluwole, who visited the scene as well as the hospital where many of the injured were being treated.

While much of Nigeria struggles with security issues including Islamic extremism, Ondo is widely known as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria.
