PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Breitbart News exclusively in an interview that House Republicans sent dozens of “preservation notices” to across the federal government to agencies and departments of Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration ordering them to hold the documents in anticipation of possible subpoenas by House Republicans after the 2022 midterm elections. Additionally, McCarthy said he was tasking each House committee to engage fully with oversight issues — rather than just having everything go through the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform — expanding the using the levers of congressional authority to engage in a massive and unprecedented effort. to curb waste, fraud and abuse of power by the Biden administration.
“First we focus on the main problem drivers because we want to win the election,” McCarthy told Breitbart News. “Inflation is number one and we’re beating them by over 20 points, crime, the border, fentanyl, energy independence, and we’re going to put it all in the commitment to America. But what we will also have is our accountability project. Thus, each committee has an oversight sub-committee. Most people think that when you come to Congress, if you want to do oversight, you go to the Oversight Committee. No, each committee has one.
McCarthy’s interview, at the House GOP retreat here at the Marriott in Sawgrass, just outside Jacksonville, where a few weeks ago professional golfers competed in The Players Championship (TPC) tournament, turned heavily focused on preparing for the oversight Republicans plan if and when they take over the U.S. House Majority. Republicans are five seats from a majority, and with Biden’s approval rating and wildcard polls showing a steady GOP lead over Democrats, the GOP is confident it can pull off a midterm victory and resume control of at least the lower house of Congress if not the US Senate as well. With a majority come the gavels on committees and the ability to compel the production of documents and the testimony of witnesses, as well as to call hearings and set the agenda for Congress, which Republicans do not have. not had since the 2018 midterms saw the Democrats return to power. During the GOP retreat, in addition to finalizing the House GOP agenda “Commitment to America” — a product that should be very similar to Newt Gingrich’s 1994 deal with America — McCarthy hones member watchdog skills by organizing training sessions for House Republicans so they’re ready to get going on day one rather than having Biden and his allies drag out document requests and subpoena cooperation for ages. months when the GOP gets the hammers back.
“What I’m doing here on this retreat is one of the biggest escapes outside of politics, we’re going to have some training and bring some old experts in and walk them through some examples so they can see how do it and I make everybody do it,” McCarthy said. [James] Come, we have [Jim] Jordan, we have staff and outsiders coming in. We show them some of the things we’re going to look for and how, and we start now – you don’t wait because they’ll run out of time on you.
McCarthy also noted that Republicans across Congress have sent dozens of “preservation notifications” to key government agencies and departments — and he’s training the entire conference to help lead on that.
“What I’m doing at this retreat is we’re going to process every committee — and train every member — how to do oversight and how to hold the administration accountable,” McCarthy said. “They’re going to get the training tools now, start building the cases now, and then what we have to do when we come in, then we’ll have the subpoena power that we don’t have now. But what can we all collect? We will make them keep the information. We sent out a number of requests for information – we sent them letters to preserve the documents, preservation notices.
Some particular things McCarthy mentioned that House Republicans intend to investigate include the origins of the coronavirus pandemic in communist-controlled China, the efforts of Biden’s Justice Department and the attorney general. Merrick Garland to target parents at the request of the National School Board Association (NSBA), and the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“A few key things that we’re focusing on are the origin of COVID, the attorney general going after parents — think about that,” McCarthy said. “Why was this letter created and signed? Why the Secretary of Education — why was he involved? This whole process where they go after their parents. Afghanistan – who made these decisions and the process, right? These are some of the main ones and we have others.
McCarthy also declared the Biden family’s deep ties to top officials in the Chinese Communist Party’s intelligence community – as evidenced in the best-selling book by Breitbart News contributor Peter Schweizer. Red-handed: How America’s elites get rich helping China win – will also be a major subject of investigation. He also mentioned investigating Big Tech and media efforts to keep Hunter Biden’s laptop story that the New York Post erupted before the 2020 election with the American people.
“I think we need the basis of all these issues,” McCarthy said when asked about it. ” Why the New York Times say it was wrong? Why did Twitter block the information from showing up in the article of the New York Post what had they done before? Now, if that’s true, we have to follow it and see what happened in there and see what’s inside.
Many members of the House GOP conference are new and were not in Congress during the Barack Obama administration’s oversight battle days when scandals such as Benghazi, Operation Fast and Furious and the targeting of Tea Party groups by the IRS broke. McCarthy said he wants Republicans to learn from the past as they move forward.
“What I found in the majority there was that it took so long to figure it all out because they hid it all,” McCarthy said. “We want to learn from the past and apply it to a changing future and be better prepared when we take over now. There’s a lot of research we’re doing right now. When we have subpoena, we can use it to get the information we don’t have. But we already collect a lot. I don’t know what new thing might pop up, but as we gather information, we discover something else. We may find a new thing or two that the public doesn’t know about as we gather information now. If I have more members who understand how to do this research, we will only be stronger.
Most important, McCarthy said, is that House Republicans are ready to “go live” immediately after the midterms.
“There are several things that I looked at. I bring in experts from before who have done it to show them the way and how you do it right,” McCarthy said. “How do you collect the information you use? How do you find information you haven’t thought of? When each committee does oversight in its area of expertise, we do it. There are people who have been here for a while who have never done it. So we have to teach them. The other thing you need to have too is you need to have the right staff there. So the other thing you have to do if we take the majority, and we identify that now, is who would be some of the staff to oversee this subcommittee and then who can be the best members to serve as chairs of these sub-committees? What is the best information we can gather now? We put it all together so we can get started right from the start.
