Panoply is this weekend, and it is often said that it is always raining during the weekend event. However, is it true that it always rains during Panoply?
Looking at previous weekends when the event would usually take place. It was the last weekend in April, dating back to the first Panoply in 1982. There were extreme weather conditions during that weekend.
The hottest temperature was 91 degrees in 2017. The coldest start to the weekend was an early morning low of 39 degrees in 1988. The wettest weekend was 2010 with a single day rainfall total of 2.6 inches.
It hasn’t rained all of Panoply’s weekends, but there may be a reason why people associate rain with Panoply. In Panoply’s history, there have been 12 weekends where there was no measurable rainfall in Huntsville. This means that of the 36 times Panoply took place in person, there was measurable rainfall during 24 of the weekends.
Statistically, it rained on 67% of Panoply weekends. Only 33% of Panoply weekends were completely dry. This is probably where the association of rain and thunderstorms with Panoply comes from. Remember, just because it’s raining on a Panoply weekend doesn’t mean there’s always a washout.
