Do you like to take very hot showers? A vascular surgeon explains why it’s a really bad idea.
Everyone has a different temperature when they take a shower. Some people like them very hot because they find the heat to be deeply relaxing and great for soothing muscles and relieving tension. Others may enjoy the way the steam clears their airways and opens pores.
Unfortunately, for those who like super hot showers, Dr. Mahyar Maddahali, a doctor who specializes in vascular surgery and is known as Dr. Max on TikTok, says they can be bad for your health.
His video was in response to a man who complained that he couldn’t shower with his wife because she likes the water to be too hot.
“If you take showers that are too hot, this is for you,” Dr. Max opens his video before explaining that hot showers can strip away our body’s natural oils needed for healthy skin. He adds that they can also damage hair.
Extremely hot showers can even cause you to faint.

For those of you looking for a second opinion, New York dermatologist Robert Anolik agrees with Dr. Max. He told Vogue that the best temperature for your shower should be “lukewarm” or somewhere between 98° and 105° F.
Anolik says people should refrain from extremely hot showers, mainly because of potential damage to the skin. “The skin barrier is made up of skin proteins and oils that prevent water from evaporating out of the skin, protecting it from the outside world,” says Anolik. “It’s one of our first lines of defense against infection and pollution.”
