Do the 49ers already have regrets with Trey Lance?

The San Francisco 49ers are showing fans that anything can happen in the NFL.

After months of trade rumors surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo, the team have restructured their contract.

While the move saves the team money this season, it could also signal something else.

That something else is that they regret making Trey Lance their starting quarterback.

However, is regret real or is it just clickbait on the internet?

Lance’s pre-season performance was a mixed bag

Although the NFL preseason doesn’t always signal what will happen in the regular season, it can be a gauge for players.

Lance’s pre-season review shows mixed results.

With limited time in Game 1, he went four for five, passing for 92 yards and a touchdown.

However, his next match was not so good.

Instead of rushing for yards, he went seven-for-11, with 49 passing yards.

With this performance coming up against the Houston Texans, it had people throwing red flags at the young QB.

Some have gone so far as to say the 49ers will miss the playoffs with Lance as QB.

So is that why the team kept Jimmy G, in an effort to keep their playoff hopes alive in 2022?

Garoppolo is best during a two-minute drill

The young quarterback the 49ers are starting has no two-minute drill experience.

However, Garoppolo has that invaluable experience.

Several times he brought the team back from defeat in the last two minutes.

When the 49ers needed him the most last season, he replaced them in the final two minutes.

He’s a completely different quarterback when he plays that rushing offensive style.

Could this be the secret reason the 49ers kept him?

It’s not likely, but it gives the 49ers a great quarterback under pressure.

However, the 49ers keeping him isn’t a problem for Lance.

There is something else that could cause it to fail in 2022.

San Francisco offensive line not the best in 2022

Two-minute drills aside, Lance enters 2022 with an offensive line under construction.

The team will no longer have Alex Mack, who chose retirement this season over a return to San Francisco.

They also lost Laken Tomlinson, the team’s left guard since 2017.

With a new cast of linemen on offense, Lance doesn’t have those old 2021 faces.

This could lead to problems if the players don’t get along well to protect their young quarterback.

He’s already seen major problems in their final preseason game of the season against the Texans.

With that in mind, perhaps the regret should be on management for not investing in a better offensive line.

49ers have no reason to regret starting Lance

Throwing Lance at Garoppolo isn’t bad.

They must give him starting time and experience if he is their future.

However, this could prevent the team from qualifying for the playoffs.

It’s not on Lance, it’s on their offensive line.

As Garoppolo knows how to work with a less than stellar line, he would be better for their playoff chances.

As long as the 49ers can wait for Lance’s development, there are no regrets in starting him in 2022.
