Disney+ ‘She-Hulk’ Star Tatiana Maslany Says ‘Strong Female Lead’ Phrase Is Problematic

Tatiana Maslany, star of the next Disney+ Marvel series She-Hulk: Lawyersays the phrase “strong female leader” is problematic, demonstrating once again that even well-meaning praise for woke celebrities will only make them more dissatisfied and unbearable.

Maslany said the Guardian that she finds the “strong female leader” label irritating in an interview promoting She-Hulk.

“It’s reductive,” the Emmy-winning actress said. “It’s just as much a shave of all shades, and just as much a trope. It’s a box no one fits. Even the phrase is frustrating. It’s like we’re meant to be grateful to be that .

“I’m really interested in when these [marginalized] voices can speak without it being like, “Oh my God, it’s just women” or “Oh my God, it’s a story of a queer couple”, and those stories become as naturally expected as now they are special.” Maslany added.

At another point in the interview, the actress seemed to choose her words carefully while talking about what she called “a celebration of female friendship” in the upcoming She-Hulk film.

“It takes time and it’s about finding new ways to tell stories,” she said. “What made me go, ‘Oh, okay, that’s fresh and surprising,’ is that it sounds deeply feminine, if I can use a binary term.”

“There is a feminine side. This word is often used as a derisive term, but for me there is a celebration of female friendship in She-Hulk it’s really fun,” added Maslany.

Whereas She-Hulk may strike a chord with a niche audience of Tumblr obsessives, that alone probably won’t change the fortunes of the struggling Disney+ streaming platform. Last week, the company announced that it was reducing its internal projections for user growth as well as rising subscription prices.

At the same time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is also suffering, with woke box office busts such as Eternals breaking the massive winning streak of superhero movies and even familiar properties such as Thor: Love and Thunder see huge drops in ticket sales in the second week.

However, even before the MCU has a chance to course correct, the studio will continue to release woke content that is already in production. Another Disney+ Marvel series, Stone heartrecently announced the casting of a RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant and a “non-binary” actress.
