1:04 a.m.: disaster stopped narrowly in Zaporizhia, says Zelensky
The Ukrainian president said on Thursday evening that the world had narrowly stopped a radiological disaster with the interruption for several hours of the nuclear power supply to the Zaporizhia power plant.
According to Volodymyr Zelensky, this interruption was caused by Russian bombardments which set fire to the surroundings of a coal-fired power station located near the Zaporijjia nuclear power station and supplying it with electricity. Emergency diesel generators ensured the power supply of the nuclear power plant and preserved its safety, added the Ukrainian president.
“If our station personnel had not reacted after the interruption, we would have been forced to face the consequences of a nuclear disaster,” he said in a speech. “Russia has put Ukraine and all Europeans at the gates of a radiological disaster”.
