Dimitar Berbatov advises Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to “stay calm and work hard”, insists Ralf Rangnick could be successful like Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel if given the time

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has given advice to struggling Red Devils forward Marcus Rashford.

The 24-year-old England international has only scored three goals and one assist for his club so far this season, failing to recreate the form he found last season.

Rashford has now played 11 scoreless games

In 2020/21, he managed 21 goals and 15 assists, despite being absent for two months, showing his current situation.

However, fans don’t need to look at Rashford’s stats to know he is a trusted player.

The forward’s apathy was epitomized by his choice not to continue Mason Greenwood’s parried shot against Aston Villa, an opportunity Rashford would normally have seized without hesitation.

Following his poor performance in the FA Cup draw, Berbatov, who played for the Red Devils between 2008 and 2012, believes that although the forward’s game “is not the best yet” he can return to its previous form – just like it does.

Speaking to Betfair, the ex-Man United striker said: “After watching Marcus Rashford closely recently, it sure looks like something is going on with him.

“His body language is not that of a confident player. His game isn’t the best right now, there is so much more he can do, but something is going on and they have to find out what the problem is.

“I read that he is doing really well in training and that he works really hard, but his performances don’t show it. He was yelling at his teammates against Aston Villa to hand the ball back to him, I was the same sometimes, I was in a good position and no one was passing the ball to me.

“It can make you angry, it can affect your game. The only thing he can do is keep working hard in training and find the back of the net in a game.

The Bulgarian has found the net 56 times for the Red Devils during his time at Old Trafford, but he too suffered a drop in form, as did Rashford.

He added: “I remember going 10 games without scoring a goal, then I scored five against Blackburn, forwards go through those spells. The only solution is to stay as calm as possible and know that a bad spell will end at some point as long as you are given the chance to end it, you have to play to overcome it.

“He’s a particular talent, he’s only 24 and he has so much football ahead of him. It’s good that he’s facing some problems now because he will learn to deal with them.

“I’m sure he’ll be back to his best and start scoring again soon.”

The 40-year-old has already attributed his return to the support and guidance of then-boss Sir Alex Ferguson and the former Bulgaria international has said that over time Ralf Rangnick could bring out the best of players in United.

“That stuff can cause a little bit of unhappiness,” Berbatov explained, “And when you pair that with not-so-convincing performances, you have this type of situation.

“However, look at what Klopp and Tuchel have achieved at their clubs so far, maybe with a little time something similar could happen at Man United with Rangnick.”
