Gary Neville has admitted Manchester United continue to make ‘desperate’ signings following links with Marko Arnautovic.
Shock links with the former West Ham and Stoke man emerged on Sunday and it emerged afterwards that Bologna had rejected a £7.6million offer.
Danijel Arnautovic, his brother and agent, revealed an offer from a top club had been made but did not name the Red Devils.
He said: “It is true that there is an offer from a well-known club.
“I am in contact with Bologna to see if this can be achieved.”
United’s problems were on full display in their 2-1 Matchday 1 loss to Brighton, which sums up the task ahead of Erik ten Hag.
Neville said he had “nothing to say” about Arnautovic’s links but compared him to other forward signings in recent seasons.
“The first thing you do when the phone rings from Manchester United is to reject the offer because the reality is that having lost that game to Brighton on Sunday they are actually negotiating in an even worse position than they think they are. ‘was on Saturday, and it’s an even bigger issue for them,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

“I have a comment on everything in the world, apart from the signing of Marko Arnautovic by Manchester United. I have nothing to say.
“We’ve seen Radamel Falcao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Odion Ighalo – desperate, it’s a pattern. It happens time and time again. I don’t even get mad or animated about it anymore. I don’t will not comment on this.
The Red Devils need reinforcements up front amid lingering doubts over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.
The Portuguese icon came off the bench in the loss to Brighton but his desire to leave was well publicized.
Cavani was not replaced after his departure, while Anthony Martial could be in great demand this season by Ten Hag.
Neville continued: “I’m not going into names because I think in this pre-season there are 250 players involved or linked to Manchester United, so that’s it,” he said. “We have two strikers, maybe a third, with Marcus Rashford as well.
“We considered him a striker but he had a very good pre-season on the left side and today he had two very good chances coming from the left side.
“So I think it was the right decision to do it like that. But the typical No 9 was not available today.
Someone who has spoken out about Arnautovic links, however, is talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, claiming United’s approach to the 33-year-old Austrian is “disrespectful” to the fans.
“That’s not what Manchester United fans signed up for,” he said on Sunday night’s Boot Room show.
“It was supposed to be a brave new dawn, there was a reshuffle of the board, a new manager who we were told wanted to trust the young players – clearly Arnautovic doesn’t fit into this structure.
“And Arnautovic is a problem, let’s not talk about it – if you spoke to Mark Hughes about his conduct at Stoke City, I think it would be a very enlightening conversation. He had a fight at West Ham, made that lucrative move in China.
“It’s really a step back from Manchester United.
“The most alarming phrase, to me, is the fact that Ten Hag supposedly sees him as a ‘cheap option’ – why are Manchester United looking for a cheap option? Will that fill the gap? ‘difference?
“Really they can forget Man City and Liverpool – they are over the hills and far – but will it even close the gap on Arsenal and Tottenham in the race for the top four? No chance!
“It’s a ridiculous decision by the club.”
