The Derby at Epsom Downs is another highlight of the flat racing calendar which sees the purse worth over £1.25million.
The Oaks is the star race on day one of the Derby festival in Surrey and the winner of this Group 1 will take home almost £300,000.
The Epsom Derby kicks off on June 4, while the Oaks kick off on June 3, both on 1m4f.
The Derby has been at the heart of flat racing since 1780 and helps young horses propel themselves into champions and live up to their pedigree and potential.
The Guineas at Newmarket could be a great indicator of those massive runs at the Epsom meeting, as they started over a month ago.
The Cazoo Oaks is for horses able to stay the extra distance, raced over 1m4f rather than the Newmarket mile.
The Group 1 race will see a maximum of 20 horses fielded for the British Champions Series.
Many of the more than 40 horses that have early entries in the Oaks will take part in the April meeting at Newmarket and are also favorites for the Epsom highlight.
Tuesday and Inspiral are early favorites with less than two months to go.
Aidan O’Brien not only dominates the winners in Newmarket, but often follows up with another win at the Oaks.
The coach has won the Oaks six times in the last ten renewals.
Love won both races for O’Brien in 2020 and won the Oaks by an incredible nine lengths with Ryan Moore on board, justifying the favoritism.
Inspiral which adorns the Cheveley Park Stud colors for John & Thady Gosden is targeting both the 1000 Guineas and the Oaks and is favored in betting to edge out the two in fierce competition.
Cazoo Oaks Predictions
Tuesday at 5/1
Tuesday is 12/1 for the 1000 Guineas but seems better suited to a longer trip to the Oaks.
The O’Brien-trained horse also holds an entry in the Irish 1000 Guineas at Curragh Racecourse, so it will be interesting to see if the Irish trainer chooses to enter this 3-year-old horse in all.
He is by Galileo who has a long list of winners and was an incredibly successful horse and then stallion, winning six times including the Irish Derby, King George VI and Elizabeth Stakes.
He also sired Frankel, a champion 3-year-old and the highest rated horse in the world in 2011.
So Tuesday certainly ticks all the boxes to succeed here at the start of his sprinting career, which is essential in these kinds of races.
Interestingly, Frankel spawns runner Gosden Inspiral while Dubawi also has multiple entries.
Derby Betting Tips
Reach For The Moon on 10/1 and Hafit on 33/1 (one way)
The Derby currently have 91 entries at this stage of the season ahead of the other Group 1s, which may help determine the coaches’ decision whether or not to enter this huge race.
The 1m4f course is not open to geldings and as such opens the door to colts in class 1 company.
The eye catcher is Hafit for Charlie Appleby who is part of a list of Godolphin entries in this race.
He finished second and third with just a neckline in each of the bottom two, including in a Group 3, but he is also by Dubawi and looks likely to enjoy the two extra stadiums he has faced so far.
Appleby’s string of runners, including 3-year-olds, has been phenomenal so far this season, with 13 out of 23 winners as of mid-April.
Another who might appreciate the extra distance from their current form is Reach For The Moon for the Gosdens.
He will also wear the Queen’s Silks and should be fit for this Group 1 having already won a Group 3 in convincing fashion.
