Democrat runs ad ‘designed to help’ Doug Mastriano win Pennsylvania GOP gubernatorial primary

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D), who will face a Republican opponent in the November gubernatorial election, is running an ad to boost GOP primary candidate Doug Mastriano based on the perception that he would be the easiest to defeat, the New York Times reports.

As Breitbart News reported last week, Shapiro released a new ad titled “Win for Trump” that closely tied Mastriano to former President Trump, despite the president not endorsing the primary race.

The pro-Mastriano ad portrays the Pennsylvania state senator as a staunch defender of fair election laws and calls him ‘one of Donald Trump’s staunchest supporters’ in a ploy for primary voters of the GOP.

“If Mastriano wins, it’s a win for what Donald Trump stands for,” the ad reads. The ad does not audibly state that it was paid for by Shapiro’s campaign, but instead includes a chyron at the bottom of the screen titled “Paid by Shapiro for Pennsylvania”.

the New York Times reported Friday that the pro-Mastriano Shapiro ad “seems intended to help one of his opponents in the Republican primary” in a bid to ensure he runs against the weakest Republican opponent in November.

“Some of Shapiro’s advisers had toyed with the publicity maneuver for months, although campaign management did not discuss the idea until it was clear that Mr. Mastriano was ahead,” said declared on Time reported.

The announcement comes as an Osage Research poll of 600 swing voters in Pennsylvania shows Mastriano losing in a head-to-head clash with Shapiro.

While swing voters by a 3% margin say they prefer a Republican to a Democrat for governor, 49% said they would vote for Shapiro if Mastriano were the GOP nominee. Mastriano trails in the match with only 41%.

“This is an unsustainable number for a candidate in the general election for a party,” note the pollsters. “Mastriano’s image is already upside down with swing voters with only 16% having a favorable opinion of Mastriano while already 22% have an unfavorable opinion.”

Pennsylvania’s GOP gubernatorial primary will be held on May 17.
