auricio Pochettino tried to avoid talking about work at Manchester United when asked about it on Tuesday, but an Etihad win on Wednesday night would only fuel the fire.
The football gods often have the odd knack of crafting an intriguing narrative and the fact that Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain side face Manchester City just days after they were installed as favorites to succeed United is another prime example.
“We are in a company where the rumors are there, I fully understand what is going on – sometimes in a positive way and sometimes in a negative way,” said Pochettino. “That sort of thing can’t distract.”
It remains to be seen whether the talks around United will distract Pochettino, but, anyway, beating City on Wednesday would surely only add to the conviction of many that he should replace Solskjaer.
United are ideally keen to name an interim boss by the summer, and they have contacted former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde, but the chance to land Pochettino must surely be at the back of their minds.
Pochettino, however, is right to try and focus on Wednesday’s Champions League game, given that he will likely decide who wins Group A.
City are currently in the lead, but PSG are only a point behind and a win would allow them to reclaim the top spot.
“We have to create chances, create and score,” said Pochettino. “Winning is the most important thing because if we win we are sure to qualify.”
As in recent days, all eyes will be on Manchester.
