Defending champions Chelsea drew 13-time European Cup champions Real Madrid in the most riveting of Champions League quarter-finals.

The first duo drawn at UEFA headquarters on Friday sent Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti back to the London club where he won a league and cup double a year before being sacked by the then owner, Roman Abramovich.

In turbulent times for Chelsea, Abramovich, a Russian billionaire linked to Vladimir Putin, relinquished control of the club before having his assets in Britain frozen this month following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The three English clubs avoided each other in the draw, as did the three Spanish teams.

The draw for the semi-finals has also been made, with Manchester City or Atletico facing Chelsea or Real Madrid, while Benfica or Liverpool will face Villarreal or Bayern.

Villarreal are the only team remaining in the draw to have never reached the final.

The first legs of the quarter-finals will be played on April 5 or 6, with the return matches the following week.

The semi-finals will be played between April 26 and May 4 with the final scheduled for May 28 at the Stade de France in the Paris suburbs.

In the Europa League quarter-finals, Barcelona have been paired with Eintracht Frankfurt as they continue their bid to win the second-tier European event for the first time.

Barca have five Champions Cup/League titles and four of the former Cup Winners’ Cup, but they have never won the UEFA Cup/Europa League.

The winners will face either West Ham or Olympique Lyonnais, who will meet in the quarter-finals, semi-finals.

Italy’s Atalanta will face German opposition again at RB Leipzig after knocking out Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16.

The winners of this tie will then face either Braga or Rangers, who will contest the remaining quarter-final.

The draw for the Europa Conference League pitted Bodo/Glimt against Roma, whose winners will face Leicester or PSV Eindhoven.

Feyenoord will face Slavia Prague with the winners to meet Marseille or PAOK.
