Shikhar Dhawan remarked that Deepak Hooda’s absence from the T20 mix as India’s No.3 because of the senior pros is completely justified. Hooda, despite reaching a scintillating century in Ireland, has not been used in the England T20s and is yet to beat in the West Indies T20Is in his preferred position.
Deepak Hooda’s rise to prominence since IPL 2022 has sparked a lot of interest among Indian cricket fans. Hooda had a superb IPL campaign this year, scoring over 400 runs for Lucknow Super Giants while battling to No. 3. He was recalled by the BCCI for his scorching spectacle and the 27-year-old followed it up with a jaw-dropping hundred in a T20I game in Ireland. In the process, he became the fourth Indian to hit the three-figure mark in the format.
Still, Hooda had to warm up the bench in England because of the return of Virat Kohli. Then again in the West Indies in the first three T20Is, he was not allowed to get his preferred batting position due to Shreyas Iyer. It might have been a questionable call as many had started to assume him as India’s sure-fire starter in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. However, Shikhar Dhawan believes there are no surprises in Hooda’s downfall. The veteran Indian fly-half thinks Hooda can’t become a safe starter when there are senior pros in the mix who have done well for a decade.
“He (Deepak Hooda) sat down because a senior player had to play. Deepak is fine but if there is a senior player he has to wait because senior players have done so well for 10 years. This n “It’s not a big thing. Be it Deepak or someone else, it’s completely normal,” Dhawan said as quoted by India Today.
“If the communication is good then there is no problem. I’m sure they must have a reasoning. There is a process, every captain and coach has a different process. So whatever their process is , they’ll go accordingly. I’m sure they’re creating a healthy environment there.”
