Decatur Police Department warns of scammers posing as cops

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – The Decatur Police Department (DPD) is warning residents of a scam involving people posing as police officers.

DPD said it received several reports of scammers spoofing the department number and pretending to be an agent of DPD. They say the person called has an outstanding warrant and is being asked to pay money to avoid jail time.

DPD said he would never call and ask for money to settle a money order over the phone.

Residents who receive a call requesting payment over the phone or by purchasing gift cards should hang up immediately.
