Decatur man pleaded guilty to slitting his girlfriend’s throat in 2019 murder case

DECATUR, Alabama – A man accused of slaughtering his girlfriend in 2019 pleaded guilty in court on Monday to murder.

Decatur police have charged Bernardino Matias with murder over the death of 16-year-old Tania Rico at a house in Bluebird Lane on October 24, 2019.

Police said Matias cut the victim’s throat at her home and then left the state. Matias was then arrested in Knoxville, Tenn.

Court documents showed the victim had a relationship with Matias, who was 19 at the time, for around three years before being killed.

The sentence is set for January 12, 2022, at 9 a.m. Matias’ bail has been revoked.
