Death toll rises to 12 in Russian attack on hypermarket in Kharkiv – POLITICO

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, is about 30 kilometers from the Russian border and has come under attack in recent weeks as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have made inroads into the northeastern region.

“This strike on Kharkiv is a new manifestation of Russian madness,” declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday evening. “Only madmen like Putin are capable of killing and terrorizing people like this.”

A second strike in central Kharkiv later Saturday injured eight people, according to Mayor Terekhov.

Zelensky called for more military aid after Saturday’s attack. “When we tell world leaders that Ukraine needs sufficient air defense … so that Russian terrorists cannot even approach our borders, we are literally talking about preventing such attacks terrorists,” the president said.

Saturday’s attack came two days after Moscow’s forces hit a printing house in Kharkiv with several missiles, killing seven workers and injuring at least 20.
