DC Area Forecast: Much cooler today with periods of light rain

Nature

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

4/10: A little cold snap? Necessary rain is welcome, but clouds and cool daytime temperatures may not make for an ideal Friday for everyone.

  • Today: Rain/light showers. Highs: around 50, then 40 s.
  • This evening: Clearing, soothing. Minimums: 30 seconds.
  • Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, light breeze. Highs: 52-59.
  • Sunday: Partly sunny. Highs: Mid 40s to 50s.

Behind our cold front, temperatures could drop about 36 degrees in 36 hours from Thursday’s warm levels. Behind today’s chance of rain, we clear out and generally stay in the 50s through Sunday. The clearest skies can wait until the work week as temperatures moderate, but the breezes kick up a notch.

Today (Friday): Clouds and some rain for much of the day. Temperatures around 50 as sunrise approaches slide into the 40s with precipitation around. We might see a few rays of sunlight as sunset approaches. Rainfall amounts can approach a quarter of an inch in the luckiest locations. Northwest breezes can reach around 15 mph at midday, but are expected to diminish with weather in the afternoon. Trust: medium-high

This evening: Clear skies and calming westerly breezes. Low temperatures across most of the region are expected to bottom out in the 30s. Mostly low and mid 30s outside the Beltway, with upper 30s to near 40 in the city and near the bay. Trust: medium-high

Veterans Day (Saturday): Mostly sunny skies seem likely. A midday and afternoon breeze near 15 mph from the northwest adds some wind chill to the high temperatures around 52 to 59. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow evening: The sky should only have a few clouds as breezes remain somewhat tame. Temperatures above 20 to mid 30s are a likely range for low temperatures. Trust: medium-high

Sunday: This is probably our coolest, coolest day yet. High temperatures can range from the mid-40s in the generally cooler locations to the north and west to the 50s around the Beltway. A few clouds from time to time in an otherwise sunny sky shouldn’t bother too much. Trust: medium-high

Sunday night: The skies may remain clear and the breezes may calm down completely for once. This combination allows for easy heat dissipation, producing cold, low temperatures between the mid-20s and around 30, with mid-30s in the downtown area. Confidence: average

Clear and mostly sunny skies Monday and Tuesday as our coolness moderates toward the 50s, or closer to the average high temperatures for this time of year. Rain chances remain off the table, but we have a chance of a slightly higher breeze both days. Despite moderate temperatures, the air mass remains dry and cool (static shock and hydration may be a priority). Trust: medium-high
