David Moyes downplays West Ham’s Champions League chances, praises players after Chelsea win, talks about January transfer plans

David Moyes has insisted West Ham are not in the top four at the moment despite a brilliant win over Chelsea this weekend.

Moyes was delighted with the character his side showed to come back twice from behind to beat the European Champions 3-2 at London Stadium.

It kept the Hammers’ place in the top four, with Tottenham up their necks, but it continues the feel-good factor around the club at this time.

They advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League with ease, and that hasn’t hurt their form in the league.

Moyes has received many compliments for the team he has put together at West Ham and he spoke to Jim White about talkSPORT following the win over Chelsea.

“I think we didn’t play very well and we beat Chelsea which makes him even better,” he said.

“Normally you have to play really, really well and I just think we got the result. A bit of luck in the end, but it was a great three points.

He continued, “The reason I can say we can challenge them (the best teams) is because of what I’ve seen from the players.

“What I saw players and what I saw at the start is not disappointing. It gave me confidence to talk about the players in a positive way.

“The players have stepped up again and they are on the spot.

“There have been a few games recently where we have been under, but I don’t feel like we played much better today than against Brighton or Wolves.

“The difference today is that we scored goals, one was a penalty and the other was a bit lucky from a cross, but overall the other night we didn’t ‘ve had no luck.

“We have improved and it has given me confidence that we can challenge the top four.

“I could never turn around and say we’ll be one of the top four teams, not where we are right now.

“I think the consistency to stay in the top eight will always give us a chance to see what we can do.”

The atmosphere inside London Stadium was incredible on Saturday as they beat Chelsea, and Moyes can take credit for that.

He said: “I think the games in the stadium have been really good. I have to say that a lot of praise should go to the players for their efforts. Their run and the goals they score, there aren’t many teams in the Premier League with a positive goal difference.

“The ones who have are all the best teams and we are one of those who have. I’m happy with that because I want to be a team that scores goals and is fun.

“I also want to be mean and that the teams don’t score against me. It’s a balance, but for now I will take the 3-2 against Chelsea.

Moyes will now be tasked with continuing that form until 2022 and hopefully qualifying again for the Europa League and possibly even the Champions League.

The January transfer market opens shortly and the West Ham boss has hinted that a signing could be made, but only if the right one comes along.

Jesse Lingard’s loan in January 2021 was inspired and sent them back into the top six, and that’s the kind of impact he’ll be looking for again.

Moyes added, “If we could, we would try to (strengthen in January). It’s great that the window is open because it means you can try to make a transfer, but that doesn’t mean there are transfers you need to get.

“Finding players who can make a difference in January is not an easy thing to do. “
