Cockney gangster Dave Courtney recorded an extraordinary video explaining he was considering suicide and why – three months before he was found dead.

The reformed conman filmed himself explaining why he was taking what he called “the coward’s path” – but celebrated “the bad life I had”.

Friends close to him said the footage showed he planned his own death for more than three months before he died Saturday night or Sunday morning – and they are making the video public so fans can see it.

Courtney’s digital farewell message was filmed on July 5 this year, but was only discovered on her mobile phone today by grieving friends and was later made public via social media.

In it, the 64-year-old speaks directly to the camera, often smiling and laughing, and explains his decision.

In the intimate film, the ex-gangster says: “As you can all see, I am healthy in mind and body. Sorry, I took the coward’s route.

“Don’t rack your brains wondering why I would do this…I’ll tell you why.

“No woman issues or anything like that.

‘I am in pain. And hide a lot of pain.

Wearing a black Adidas t-shirt and looking intently at the camera, he then talks about his arthritis “which paralyzes me.”

“I can’t go up and down the stairs or get in and out of the car.

“I’m not enjoying it at the moment. That’s really it and I don’t want to waste the bad life I had. It was superb. Every day I can think back to, it was funny and brilliant.

He said he had considered not killing himself so as not to “bother anyone else.”

But he added: “I enjoy it and I do what I want. That’s really why I’m not here today. Do not be sad. Please do not be sad.

He denied long-standing rumors that he was “a friend of the police” and kept more than 100 friends from going to prison through his contacts with the police.

In the three-minute, 33-second video, Courtney said he wasn't enjoying life right now and was hiding a lot of pain.

Laughing at this point, he said he was sure there would be haters and a “million people would write books saying I fucked Dave, whatever.”

He then explains in detail in the 3 minute 33 second video how he was misunderstood as a police informant.

He finally finishes with a smile and a shrug: “Um… well… That’s really all.”

The poignant film then ends.

Brendan McGirr, Courtney’s roommate of 32 years, wished her goodnight to check out her body Sunday morning at breakfast time.

But Mr Courtney’s friends had speculated there might have been foul play.
