Famous Iranian director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were stabbed to death at their home by an unknown assailant, state media reported on Sunday.

The official IRNA news agency quoted Hossein Fazeli, a judiciary official, as saying that Mehrjhi and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were found dead with stab wounds to their necks.

Fazeli said the director’s daughter, Mona Mehrjui, discovered the bodies while visiting her father on Saturday evening at his home in a suburb about 30 km west of the capital, Tehran.

The report says authorities are investigating and are not speculating on motive, although the wife has complained of being threatened with a knife on social media in recent weeks.

Mehrjui, 83, was known as a co-founder of the new Iranian cinematic wave in the early 1970s, mainly focused on realism. He has received numerous awards, including a Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Gold Shell at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 1993.

Mehrjui studied in the film program at the University of California, Los Angeles in the early 1960s.
