Daryl Powell to succeed Steve Price as Warrington coach

Warrington has appointed Daryl Powell of Castleford as his new coach from 2022.

Yorkshireman, 55, the longest-serving Super League head coach who leaves the Tigers at the end of the season, will succeed Steve Price when the Australian returns to his homeland with his family.

Once Powell made his announcement almost three weeks ago, he was immediately linked to the vacant position at Halliwell Jones Stadium and has now signed a three-year contract.

Warrington chairman Stuart Middleton said: “After the completion of a thorough process, we believe Daryl is the best man to take the club forward in 2022 and beyond.

“His coaching philosophy and the brand of rugby league he promotes is something that really appealed to us.

“The impact he has had at Castleford is very impressive, taking them from 12th place to the league leaders in four years in a manner of play unmatched in the Super League.

“His ability to improve players was also an attraction. Under his leadership, he helped develop three players in Men of Steel.

“We have an exciting group of emerging young people, so we can’t wait to see how it will help them shape and develop their game.”

Powell wants to end his time with Castleford in a positive way

Powell, a British international who cut his teeth with Leeds, changed Castleford’s fortunes after joining them from Featherstone in 2013.

He took the club to a first Challenge Cup final since 1992 in their first full season and orchestrated a League Leaders’ Shield success in 2017, the year they reached a first grand final.

Powell said: “Warrington are an exceptional club with a rich history and the opportunity to coach the club from 2022 is very special. I look forward to the challenge.

“Wherever I have been as a coach, I have fully integrated into the club and the city. I think it’s really important as a coach that you do that and I can’t wait to meet all the Warrington fans next season. .

“My coaching philosophy is to help players achieve special things and I think everyone knows and can see what I love to do with my players and my teams.

“I feel like I’m moving from one special club to another. I think it’s important to bring it out into the open now so that I can focus on the year ahead and there is certainty on both sides at this point.

“I hope there will be some excitement at Warrington and excitement at Castleford that I can end there in a really positive way this season.”

Powell has already staged a win over Warrington this year as the Tigers won the first round at Headingley and the clubs meet again in the seventh round at Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday 21 May.
