Lions head coach Dan Campbell says he was the one to overturn the failed fake punt deep in Lions territory that led to a Packers touchdown.
“Yeah, look, it was a bad decision on my part,” Campbell said. “It’s a bad decision. You know, I shouldn’t have done that to those guys. It’s a bad decision. It’s a bad decision. On me. It is. I should not have done that.
Campbell may have been the most aggressive head coach in the NFL on fourth downs, and for the most part, he has served the Lions well. But the fake punt on fourth-and-4 at the Lions’ 23-yard line seemed like an inopportune time to do it, and the Packers seemed ready for it.
The Lions pulled off the same fake in their Week 1 win over the Chiefs, but this time they gained three yards on fourth-and-2. Running the same play when they needed four yards was a big risk, and Campbell knows it’s a risk he shouldn’t have taken.
