Daily Harvest advertises tara flour as implicated ingredient in product that has sickened and hospitalized hundreds of customers

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Food delivery service Daily Harvest cited the ingredient in one of its products as the reason hundreds of people were sickened and hospitalized after consuming the item. In some cases, clients have had their gallbladders removed.

The company claims that the tara flour in its French lentil + leek crumbles is the cause of the problem. According to Daily Harvest, tara flour is a source of vegetable protein. Daily Harvest issued a voluntary recall of its crumbs on June 17. The CEO of Daily Harvest said tara flour was only used in French lentil + leek crumbs and the company no longer sources from this producer.

The CEO also said the producer did not provide any ingredients for the company’s 140 dishes and other dishes. Daily Harvest did not name the producer of its tara flour. Information attorney Bill Marler, who represents nearly 300 Daily Harvest clients, says people want to know.

“Knowing who Tara’s supplier is does a number of things, one is it helps the FDA, it helps consumers, it helps attorneys determine where the contamination event occurred, you know that Did Tara come directly from Peru to the manufacturer in Minnesota or did it come from other sources where contamination could have occurred,” Marler said.

The CEO of Daily Harvest said the company’s investigative team will continue to work with the FDA and the tara flour producer to determine what specifically is making people sick.
