D.C.-area forecast: Terrific Tuesday as late-week heat burst looms

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

10/10: We cannot miss this opportunity to dance happily throughout this comfortable and sunny day.

  • Today: Partly to mostly sunny. Highs: 76-82.
  • This evening: Partly cloudy. Lowest: 55-64.
  • Tomorrow: Partly to mostly sunny. Highs: 78-84.

Late spring and summer are competing this week as we initially enjoy very comfortable warmth but then face a blast of heat and humidity at the end of the week. A cool front passing Friday evening, which could trigger a few storms, should clear us up and bring down humidity in time for the weekend.

Today (Tuesday): Skies are partly to mostly sunny with delightful highs in the 70s and 80s. The icing on the cake is low humidity, as our dew points are only in the 50s this afternoon. An isolated shower or short-lived thunderstorm cannot be ruled out late this afternoon into the evening, but most of us should remain dry and very pleasant. Light winds are from the northwest at 5-10 mph. Trust: medium-high

This evening: Partly cloudy and still mostly comfortable with lows in the mid 50s to low 60s along with light north breezes around 5 mph. Trust: high

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Skies are partly to mostly sunny with slightly warmer temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s. Humidity increases only slightly, but most of the day should see dew points in the comfortable 50s. Winds are close to calm, but could start to blow lightly from the southwest late in the day. Trust: high

Tomorrow evening: Partly cloudy and slightly heavier with lows into the 60s. Confidence: Medium-High

The summer heat is coming THURSDAY. Partly to mostly sunny skies and southerly winds push highs into the upper 80s and low 90s. Humidity returns to moderate levels, making it feel a little more sweaty. Thursday night is expected to be partly cloudy and muggy, with lows in the 60s to mid 70s. Confidence: Medium-High

Friday This is our hottest day of the season so far, with temperatures in the low to mid 90s as well as high humidity. Thunderstorms could develop in the afternoon and evening as a cool front approaches, with a few potentially strong to severe storms. After evening storm chances, Friday night is expected to clear and cool with lows in the mid to upper 60s. Confidence: average

THE weekend It looks pretty good with partly to mostly sunny skies both days. Highs Saturday will be in the mid to upper 80s, with lows Saturday night in the 60s. Humidity is relatively low Saturday, but it could rise slightly Sunday, Father’s Day. Trust: medium-high
