D.C.-area forecast: Gusty downpours today and staying windy into the weekend

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: Heavier showers arrive later in the day and help wash away all the pollen.

  • Today: Cloudy and windy with increasing showers, thunder possible. Peaks: 66 to 72.
  • This evening: Showers and thunderstorms are likely. Lowest: 53 to 59.
  • Tomorrow: A few showers, windy. Peaks: 62 to 68.

A storm system is moving up from the south over our area today, bringing lots of moisture to the Gulf. This makes for a rainy afternoon and the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms this evening. The gusts of wind persist even on weekends, but the showers go away. Mild temperatures are constant.

Today (Thursday): Clouds thicken in the morning with a few isolated showers. In the afternoon, showers increase, with possible thunderstorms producing heavy showers locally. Southeast winds, gusting to 25 mph. Highs still manage to reach the upper 60s and lower 70s. Trust: medium-high

This evening: Showers and storms are possible intermittently overnight and a severe storm with damaging winds or even a brief tornado somewhere in the area is not ruled out. Heavy downpours and an isolated case of flooding also cannot be ruled out. Lows fall into the mid to upper 50s. Trust: medium-high

Tomorrow (Friday): Clouds are abundant but showers are much more scattered in nature. Winds are out of the west but still gust up to 30 mph. Cooler air is starting to move into the area, but highs still reach the mid-60s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow evening: Isolated showers diminish quickly, but westerly winds remain strong. Lows dip into the mid to upper 40s. Trust: medium-high

Finally, the sky is quickly clearing SATURDAY morning, but the breezes remain brisk. Highs are pleasantly in the mid to upper 60s. The night cools off quickly under clear skies with lows in the mid to upper 40s. Trust: medium-high

A weak storm comes out of the Great Lakes Sunday just to our north. This leads to another windy day, but clouds are expected to remain scattered or broken up throughout the day with just a slight chance of showers overnight. Highs reach the low to mid 70s, and lows dip to the mid to high 50s. Confidence: Average

Monday returns to mostly sunny and less windy skies for a change. The sun rises high enough in the sky these days to potentially push a few points into the 80s, but most highs settle into the mid to upper 70s. Confidence: Average
