Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition becomes the first Xbox Series X game on 3 discs
The just-announced Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will become the first Xbox Series X game to release with three discs, CD Projekt Red has confirmed.
Speaking to IGN, a spokesperson clarified exactly how the Ultimate Edition – which contains the base Cyberpunk 2077 with its Phantom Liberty expansion – will be released on each system.
“The Xbox Series
“The PlayStation 5 box includes a game disc with Cyberpunk 2077 and a code for the expansion to use on the PlayStation Store,” they added. “The PC version comes with a GOG code for the base game and the expansion. The reason for the difference in how the Phantom Liberty is included in the Ultimate Edition is due to the specific technical requirements for each platform.”
While Baldur’s Gate 3, another hit role-playing game, was expected to become the first three-disc Xbox Series 2023. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, a PS5 exclusive, is also expected to launch on two discs when it releases in February.
John Linneman of technology analysis site Digital Foundry published on X/Twitter to say why he thinks the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition won’t come with Phantom Liberty on disc. Putting it there, instead of just adding a download code, would require CD Projekt Red to resubmit their game to Sony, which would require more time and money. The same thing happened with Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Integrade, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and more.
The physical edition for consoles will also mark the first time Cyberpunk 2077 will be released under current-gen banners, with only a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of the game available physically before. However, the Ultimate Edition will not be released for these consoles, just like Phantom Liberty either.
All previous updates to the game from CD Projekt Red will of course also be included, essentially making the Ultimate Edition a one-stop shop for the complete Cyberpunk 2077 experience. Although disappointed at launch by its poor performance on consoles, the developer has since transformed Cyberpunk 2077 and the game had sold 25 million copies as of October 2023.
Phantom Liberty arrived on September 26, with update 2.0 having laid its foundations a few days earlier. It completely revamped Cyberpunk 2077 with features like a new perk system and improved AI and also shut down an Elon Musk fan theory, a reference to racing legend Ken Block and bizarre additions to the game’s biggest mystery.
In our 9/10 review of the expansion, IGN said: “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty completes a huge turnaround for CD Projekt Red’s upcoming RPG launched with the anime spin-off, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and its latest update 2.0. »
