‘Cut Inflation Act’ Not Enough to Keep Democrats Running, People Lose Wages to Inflation and Are ‘In Bad Shape’

During Monday’s “Late Night” show on NBC, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said the “Inflation Reduction Actisn’t enough for Democrats to run midterm and said people are “falling further and further behind.” Salaries do not keep up with inflation. And “we’re in a tough spot right now.”

Host Seth Meyers asked, “So do you think that’s enough for Democrats to run midterm?”

Sanders replied, “No, I don’t. Look, what we don’t talk about in Congress, and what we don’t talk about in the media, is what’s happening with working families in this country. And the truth is that the middle class in this country is falling further and further behind. Salaries do not keep up with inflation. You have over 70 million people who don’t have health insurance or who are underinsured. You have 600,000 homeless people. You have people who cannot afford prescription drugs. You have people — kids can’t afford to go to college. Kids are leaving school in deep debt, etc., etc., not to mention climate change. So, I think what we have to be honest with the American people is to say, look, we’re having a bad time – we’re having a bad time right now. It is reality. And that’s what we have to do to get out of it. But I think, Seth, to be honest with the American people, to talk about the growing gap between the very rich and everyone else. You have three people in America who own more wealth than the bottom half of American society. You have three Wall Street companies with $20 trillion in assets, major shareholders, and hundreds and hundreds of companies across America. We have billionaires buying elections. …So we have to be honest with the American people about what’s going on, who owns and controls the nation, and then have the courage to stand up to those powerful vested interests and tell those greedy bastards they can’t have it all.”
