The academy graduate, 20, performed excellently in Tuesday night’s 5-1 Champions League rout at the Estadio do Dragao, running the game from the middle of the park and providing several assists while still being close to scoring on more than one occasion.
One such performance came after Jones scored a superb goal in Saturday’s Premier League draw 3-3 at Brentford – his first top-level start to the season with Thiago Alcantara, Harvey Elliott and Naby Keita all put to the difference.
The last two games have been a timely reminder of his quality with Manchester City traveling to Anfield on Sunday, although Jurgen Klopp has revealed he was initially in doubt for the European fixture in Portugal due to an upset stomach.
“Curtis played a good game. He had some stomach problems before the game; they told me i had to keep an eye on him but i told him after the game anything, keep it because it was a really good game, ”Klopp said in his post press conference -Port.
“He played a very good game, he was everywhere, he was involved in everything. Set up the first goal with a surprising finish, the goalkeeper can not save it. In many other situations he was really there – maybe not as spectacular as the offense, but defensively he played a top notch game.
“He defended really well, pressed the blind side, a lot of things that I really liked about his performance tonight. So let’s go on, Curtis, it wasn’t bad tonight.
