He’s only been back for a few weeks, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s impact at Manchester United is huge.
Ronaldo scored twice in his second debut for the club last weekend and also scored in his Champions League debut against Swiss Young Boys.
The Portuguese is also an influential figure off the pitch – his Red Devils teammate Lee Grant gives a fascinating insight into how Ronaldo gets players to watch what they eat without saying anything.
“It was Friday night at the group’s hotel,” Grant told talkSPORT last weekend.
“So as you know you finish your dinner and usually on a Friday night you have some cheat stuff. You have apple crumble or you have some brownie and cream or whatever.
“I’m telling you now, no player touched the apple crumble and custard, no player went to get that brownie because everyone was seated and one of the guys said to me:” What does Cristiano have on his plate? ‘
“So we had a little glimpse of what he had and obviously it’s the cleanest, healthiest plate you can imagine. And it made me crack to see that no player dared to get up and have this junk food that was prepared.
Ronaldo’s return reminds Danny Mills of Roy Keane, the talkSPORT expert claiming that the 36-year-old’s return to Old Trafford would be as if the Irishman was in the locker room again.
“His influence off the pitch, around the training ground, not just the 90 minutes he plays will be extreme,” Mills said during Man United’s clash at Young Boys live on talkSPORT 2.
“Different personalities – but it’s like Roy Keane goes back to that locker room and says’ if you want to win things, if you want to win the kind of trophies that I’ve won and be as successful as me, that’s what I do .’
“He won’t say it out loud, but he’s one of the best players in the world, arguably the best, but his methodology, his training regime, the way he takes care of himself, the standards that he sets himself to take care of his body are second to none.
“There’s no reason everyone can’t do this and he’ll expect those kinds of standards.”
