A Cristiano Ronaldo non-fungible token (NFT) collectible card is expected to sell for up to £ 730,000 at an auction next month.
London-based auction house Bonhams has announced that it will be auctioning a unique version of the Manchester United striker’s card, with the digital token to be minted by Global Fantasy Football company Sorare.
An NFT (non-fungible token) is data added to a file that creates a unique signature. It can be an image file, song, tweet, website text, physical item, and various other digital formats.
They have gained prominence in recent years, particularly in the United States, with a music video of NBA superstar LeBron James which sold for £ 175,000 in March of this year.
The NFTs haven’t really taken off in the UK yet, but that could change again with the card of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, which goes up for auction earlier next month.
Nima Sagharchi, Digital Art Manager at Bonhams, told Currency.com: “The sale of the Ronaldo Card is a first for us, but as we grow our business in NFTs and Art digital is an area that we hope to develop. in the future.
“Sports Trading Cards have been valued and collected for over a century, and 2021 is largely the Year of the Sports Card with physical cards depicting Lebron James, Luka Dončić and Tom Brady each having already sold for millions. of dollars.
“The Ronaldo card on offer is unique and, as one of the greatest players of the modern era, arguably the most desirable card in the game,” Sagharchi added.
The auction will start on November 1 and end on November 11.
The auction house said it accepts cryptocurrency ether as a form of payment.
