Cristiano Ronaldo won’t scare the league’s top defenders like Virgil van Dijk and Romelu Lukaku will be the Premier League’s most important signing this summer.
That’s according to talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan, who gave his thoughts on one of the most eventful transfer windows of recent years.
England midfielder Jack Grealish broke the Premier League transfer record this summer by trading Aston Villa for Manchester City for £ 100million, while Lukaku took second on that list with his return of £ 97million. pounds sterling to Chelsea from Inter Milan.
But despite those exorbitant fees, all-time great footballer Cristiano Ronaldo stole everyone’s thunder on Friday when he made a sensational return to Manchester United from Juventus after a 12-year absence.
But when asked former Crystal Palace boss Jordan who would make the biggest difference, his response was quick and precise.
“Lukaku,” he said.
“Lukaku plays for a Chelsea team that I admire.
“I’m not a big Chelsea fan, I’m a London club fan and it’s not Chelsea so I don’t sit there in awe of Chelsea, but I admire [Thomas] Tuchel, I think he embodies everything a manager should be.
“I think his team are pretty great and I think Lukaku who will be put on this team will score over 30 goals this season.”
Lukaku has already broken his scoring duck for Chelsea after failing to find the net in his first spell, but looked slightly subdued this weekend when he faced Liverpool’s van Dijk in a draw 1 -1 at Anfield.
However, Jordan has selected another signing who will fight against the best defensemen in the league.
“In big games I don’t think Ronaldo is going to make Virgil van Dijk fear God,” Jordan said.
“I don’t think Ronaldo will put fear of God in some of these center-backs.
“But he will probably put the fear of God in Crystal Palace or Wolverhampton Wanderers or Burnley or Brentford or Newcastle United.”
Jordan went on to compare the English Premier League to Italian Serie A, while suggesting that this could be the season Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wins his first trophy as manager of Manchester United.
“If you have big-chance players playing against proper center-backs, we’ll see if Ronaldo is still able to turn the screw to a level that I doubt he’ll be able to do,” Jordan said.
“It’s one thing to play in Italian football, which I know is very defensive and technical, but it’s not that physical and it’s not that fast.
“There will be a time when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wins something, if you keep buying for £ 150million from footballers you are going to win something somewhere along the line!”
