Cristiano Ronaldo dropped out for Portugal’s final World Cup clash with Switzerland after manager Fernando Santos was unimpressed with the former Manchester United star’s behavior

Cristiano Ronaldo has been dropped for the final World Cup clash between Portugal and Switzerland.

Coach Fernando Santos left the 37-year-old on the bench for Tuesday’s knockout game in Qatar.

Ronaldo had started all three of their group stage matches, scoring one goal.

Santos decided to play Gonçalo Ramos instead.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has come under fire from his manager for his actions after being substituted in the loss to South Korea.

He put his finger to his lips after being abducted, apparently challenging striker Cho Gue-sung’s comments for asking him to speed up his exit.

“Before I was substituted, one of their players was telling me to leave quickly,” Ronaldo said. “I told him to shut up, he has no authority, he has nothing to say.”

Asked about his reaction, Santos added: “Did I see the footage? Yes, I didn’t like it, not at all. I did not like. I really didn’t like it.

“But from this moment, everything is over regarding this issue.

“These cases are resolved behind closed doors. It is resolved. Final point on this question and now everyone is focused on tomorrow’s game.

Ronaldo is Portugal’s captain and top scorer with 118 goals in 194 games.
