Cristiano Ronaldo branded ‘Hollywood signing’ but offers ‘anonymous’ display in Manchester United’s draw with Southampton

Cristiano Ronaldo has been branded a ‘Hollywood signature’ by talkSPORT host Simon Jordan ahead of a dismal display in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The disappointing result leaves United struggling in their fight for Champions League football, with West Ham, Arsenal, Tottenham all on the hunt.

The result made it back-to-back 1-1 draws for caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick, and last time out he made headlines when he dropped Ronaldo from the starting line-up against Burnley.

The Portugal captain returned to the XI for the draw against Southampton but failed to make an impact as Che Adams canceled out Jadon Sancho’s opener in the first half.

Ronaldo, 37, missed a huge chance and was ruled offside on another that ended in the net.

Making a comeback during last year’s summer transfer window, Ronaldo’s £12.86m move from Juventus was slammed by talkSPORT’s Jordan ahead of the game.

“Ronaldo was not a signing that I thought was the right fit for United for the things they needed to do,” he said.

“They had to match fire with fire, they had to match energy with energy, they had to match the ability to squeeze teams in a certain way to be able to compete at that level.

“Put Ronaldo in there, you’re going to score goals, but if you can’t match other teams, Ronaldo’s effectiveness is going to be diminished as we’ve seen.

“Of course, he appeared and had these stellar cameo moments where he scored goals and knocked United out of the basket, but I thought the signing was more of a Hollywood signing, more of a share price signing.

“It’s Ronaldo coming in to lead a team rather than being a sensible voice in the dressing room, or a centre-half coming in and doing a certain job, so I wasn’t in the camp, I wasn’t not suggesting it was going to be an abject failure, but I don’t think it was the antidote to their particular problem.

talkSPORT commentator Trevor Sinclair backed Jordan’s prediction during the game, pointing out how poor Ronaldo’s display was.

Ronaldo was left frustrated as he extended his goalless run

“Cristiano Ronaldo, I said in the first half, he was a bit anonymous,” Sinclair explained.

“You don’t really see him in the game much, he’s had this chance where he’ll be disappointed looking back on it, he gets bullied here and there.”
