Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani may be a combined age of 70, but the pair may have just found a winning formula for Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The pair were exceptional as they combined well in the lead in United’s 3-0 win over Tottenham in a well-deserved performance following the embarrassing loss to Liverpool last weekend.
Both were put on the scoresheet while Ronaldo also got an assist as Solskjaer’s formation change to three defenders proved to be effective.
Ronaldo also became the oldest Premier League player since Didier Drogba to score a goal and assist in a league game when the Chelsea man did so in December 2014 – with them both 36 and 267 days and also against Tottenham.
The Portuguese superstar scored Cavani’s goal and it was the first time two players over the age of 34 have combined for a goal at the club since Paul Scholes created Ryan Giggs in August 2010.
It was a more defensive setup from Manchester United than we’re used to, especially with the attacking skills at Solskjaer’s disposal.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, the Norwegian said: “We need to be stronger and keep the sheets cleaner. It was about trying to control the game.
“Have width and full-backs, have three center-backs who are comfortable with the ball.
“I tried to flip the ball from side to side and it worked when it worked. If not, it is torn to pieces.
He added: “We can talk about systems, tactics and all kinds, but that pass from Bruno and the finish from Cristiano was top notch.
“That pass from Cristiano to Edi (Cavani) and the timing of his race and finish was top notch again.
“Marcus had a lot of time alone to work on his finish due to his shoulder injury.
“All the goals he’s scored so far this season he’s so calm and composed and clinical.”
Ronaldo has also spoken after his brilliant performance and hopes it will be the turning point for the team.
“It was tough,” he says. “We weren’t expecting the last result in the Premier League. But, you know, I hope this time we turn the page.
“I believe some things happen for a reason and we have to be happy for this amazing afternoon. We won 3-0 in an away stadium against a tough team and we’re so, so happy about it. “
He continued, “The criticisms are still there.
“For me, I don’t mind because I played 18 years of football, so I know that someday [people will say] we are perfect and another day [they will say] we are crap.
“I know it and we have to deal with it, but it’s always better when people congratulate you and are happy with you.”
“Sometimes life is like this, sometimes we have to go through bad times and we have to change and we have changed today.”
