Criminals will get guns ‘with or without gun control’

On July 9, 1985, during a debate on the Gun Owners Protection Act (FOPA), Joe Biden (D-DE), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, sided with the NRA and argued that criminals could obtain guns “with or without gun control”.

NBC News notes that the Judiciary Committee agreed with the Republican majority in favor of FOPA, then it passed the Senate “by a lopsided 79-15.”

Biden voted for FOPA, which NBC News describes as a bill that “authorized dealers to sell rifles, shotguns and ammunition through the mail and, eventually, over the Internet.”

They noted that FOPA also “limited federal inspections of gun dealers while allowing them to sell guns at gun shows, which helped them grow in size and popularity. And it made it easier for private collectors to sell guns without obtaining a federal dealer’s license, which would play a role in what later became known as the “gun show loophole.” . »

And before you vote to vote for FOPA, Biden actually pleaded his defense.

Congressional Minutes for the Senate on July 9, 1985 quote Biden describing FOPA as “balanced legislation that protects the rights of private firearms owners while not infringing on law enforcement’s ability to dealing with those who misuse firearms or violate the law”.

He added: “In my 12 and a half years as a member of this body, I never believed that additional gun control or federal gun registration would reduce crime. I am convinced that a criminal who wants a gun can get one from illegal, untraceable and unregistered sources, with or without gun control.

On June 2, 2022, President Biden pushed for eight different gun controls, including a complete ban on a politically defined category of firearms Democrats call “assault weapons.”
