COVID-19: Ministry of Housing alerts about viral load in wastewater in Lima and Arequipa

Wastewater in Lima and Arequipa

Through an interview with RPP, the Director of Sanitation of the Ministry of Housing, Max Carbajal, revealed that the concentration level of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater increased by Metropolitan Lima.

However, he explained that it is important to take into account that this sample has nothing to do with the cases of increase by COVID-19, since this is not at all a source of contagion, on the contrary, it allows us to get a statistic about the virus.

“It must be taken into account that the water that we use goes through the sewers and reaches a residual compress and is given a treatment. At these points where the water is collected we monitor. It should be borne in mind that this may occur because a person is ill with COVID 19 excreted in these wastewater. Something that should be taken into account is that these sewage can infect me, the answer is no, since traces of the virus are found that can be detected but do not have the contagion capacity “he explained.

Asked whether this increase reveals a study should alert the public, he expressed that “The increase in concentration that has occurred in 4 of the 5 WWTPs (treatment plants of sewage water) would indicate a trend that we must monitor during the following weeks ”, Carbajal expressed.

“You have to bear in mind that an infected person may not show symptoms. During the first 4 days of infection, the virus can already be detected in the increase in which it has occurred. There is a trend that must be monitored. We work together with the minister of health to find better samples ”, added.

Under the same context, the director of Sanitation of the Ministry of Housing, expressed that this study serves to carry out epidemiological monitoring and complement the strategy of the Minsa against the COVID-19.

“This may indicate that effectively how the number of COVID 19 cases is spreading or that is why the work in conjunction with the health ministry is being handled. In Lima and Arequipa these measurements are made every week to know the behavior in both cities “, he indicated.

Dante cersso, head of the Intelligence and Data Analysis Unit (UIAD) of EsSalud, pointed out that in the district of Comas there was an increase in cases of 202%, going from 90 positive cases of COVID-19 in epidemiological week (EW) 45 (from November 7 to 13) to 272 cases in EW 46 (from November 14 to 20).

He added that in the list of districts of Lima with a greater increase in infections followed by Carabayllo, which went from 44 to 131 cases (198%), San Martín de Porres, from 133 to 367 (176%) and Puente Piedra, from 50 at 98 (96%).
