Couple accused of killing son with cerebral palsy

A couple were recently charged with killing their 17-year-old son with cerebral palsy, after he was found to be ‘severely underweight’ and had ‘bedsores’ on many areas of his body, according to police.

In a news release, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office in upstate New York said that earlier this week Lisa Waldron and her partner, Anthony Waldron, were arrested for charges related to the death of a 17-year-old boy. The sheriff’s office said Lisa Waldron was the boy’s mother and Anthony was his stepfather.

The arrest announcement comes several months after the 17-year-old boy was found dead at the couple’s home in Palermo, New York.

According to the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, on May 9, 2021, sheriff’s deputies attended a home in Palermo, responding to reports that a 17-year-old boy had been found unconscious.

“He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter,” the sheriff’s office said.

Shortly after, a post-mortem inquest found the boy “was underweight with pressure sores covering a significant portion of his body,” the sheriff’s office said.

In the months following the boy’s death, the sheriff’s office conducted a thorough investigation. Deputies spoke with the boy’s teachers, parents and doctors, as well as physical and occupational therapists.

“Previous records were obtained from medical institutions, schools and other agencies involved in the child’s care,” the sheriff’s office said.

In February, the local medical examiner’s office released a finalized report on the incident, which ruled the boy’s death a homicide. According to the report, the boy’s death was caused “in part by infection and malnutrition”.

According to the sheriff’s office, the couple were arrested on Tuesday, March 15, and charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. They were also accused of endangering the well-being of an incapacitated or physically handicapped person in the first degree.

In an update Thursday, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office said after the couple were pulled over, they were transported to the Oswego County Jail. Lisa Waldron was jailed on $10,000 cash bond or $20,000 bond, while her partner was jailed on $20,000 cash bond or $40,000 bond, authorities said .

“Both are currently scheduled to appear in Palermo Municipal Court on April 4, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.,” the press release read.

According to Syracuse.com, Oswego County District Attorney Gregory Oakes said Anthony Waldron’s bail was double his partner’s because he refused to voluntarily surrender “after a arrest warrant has been issued against him.

Syracuse.com also reported that Anthony Waldron previously served two years in prison for attempted second-degree burglary.

Newsweek contacted the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office for comment, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
