Sierra de Guerrero.- A laboratory attempt and approximately five hectares of coca plant they began to be destroyed this Thursday, August 13 in the state of Guerrero, after federal forces located a plantation with an irrigation system and equipment to fertilize in the municipality of Atoyac de Alvarez.

It was the cultivation of coca leaf number 21 found so farafter in February of last year the Mexican Army found the first plantation of this type in the entire history of the country.

In 2014, the authorities located a 1,250-square-meter plot of land with 1,620 coca leaf plants in Tuxtla Chico, Chiapas, although without any indication that they tried to transform the leaves of the plant into coca base paste, the precursor for the end powder.

A young farmer who suspiciously fled when he realized that a military convoy was approaching was the clue that led the staff of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) to a field of four coca leaf crops last Tuesday, March 9. August.

The plant is endemic to the Andes, specifically Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, but for a year, as detected by the Sedena, the Mexican cartels have been venturing into the cultivation of coca for its production, transformation and distribution.

However, according to the evidence found by the Mexican Army, so far one could speak of an experimentation phasesince only plantings have been detected but not seizures of coca base paste and/or transfer operations of the stimulant.

“It is a very important issue that we must pay close attention to. We know that there are countries that are traditionally producers of cocaine. Surely what they are doing lately in Mexico is an experiment to see if it is possible to produce this drug”, told Infobae Mexico the commander of the 27th military zone, Federico San Juan Rosales.

Within the farm, located in the Sierra Guerrerense, approximately 770 meters above sea level, several drums and drums were found -still hot- with chemical substances for the process of transforming coca leaves into base pastewhich were made available and under the protection of Sedena.

The state of Guerrero has traditionally been a poppy producerwith which opium gum is obtained, +although also marijuana), but the discovery of the coca plant and a laboratory attempt a year ago were the first findings of this in the history of the entity and at a national level.

In In 2021, 7 coca leaf plantations were found and 14 in the current yearthey detailed to Infobae Mexico commanders of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) in Guerrero.

However, in none of the 21 crops discovered since February 2021 has anyone been arrested for the plantations and It is also not known which criminal group is behind these experiments.

Despite the rise of opioids (particularly fentanyl), the Cocaine use in the United States continues to be a major source of income for Mexican cartelsboth to export and to sell in the territory itself.

According to the unofficial prices of the drug trafficking market in Mexico in 2021, a kilo of cocaine costs about USD 12,500, which translates to about 250,000 Mexican pesos. From each hectare, in addition, between 5 and 7 kilograms of the drug can be obtained.

According to information from the Mexican government, in the state of Guerrero currently operate half a dozen criminal groups, including the Guerreros Unidos, los Rojos, la Familia and the Independent Cartel of Acapulco, in addition to the presence of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel.
