“Preliminary discussions had been initiated following a friendly approach by Couche-Tard,” explained the two companies this Saturday evening, after leaving a board of directors of Carrefour. But, “in view of recent events, these discussions are interrupted”.

These “recent events” are, of course, the “courteous, but clear and definitive” veto that the French State has opposed to the takeover of “one of the major French distributors”. Reason: “Food security is priceless”, as Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, declared on Friday, on BFMTV.

However, Carrefour and Couche-Tard will not stop all discussions. They intend to “examine opportunities for operational partnerships”, for example on “the sharing of good practices in fuel distribution”, “the development of joint purchases” or even “the optimization of fuel distribution”. products on geographies common to the two groups ”.
