Contraflow driver killed in violent crash on Indiana Toll Road

LAKE COUNTY, Indiana (CBS) – A contraflow driver died following an accident on Indiana Toll Road on Friday evening.

Indiana State Police said around 9:35 p.m. that soldiers responded to an accident involving two vehicles near the Calumet exit of the toll road.

Initial reports indicate that a black 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-90 when it struck a red 2004 Freightliner semi-tractor pulling a trailer head-on.

The driver of the Jeep, a non-elderly male, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner.

The crash caused both vehicles to catch fire, authorities said.

The tractor driver was not injured.

It is not known at this time whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

Indiana Toll Road’s eastbound lanes were closed for approximately five hours for crash investigation and cleanup.
