Consider KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma finishers even if they open, Kris Srikkanth proclaims

Kris Srikkanth questioned the commonly accepted understanding of a T20 finisher, stating that according to his understanding, openers can also be finishers. Srikkanth then used examples from the Indian team to elaborate on what he thinks the role of a finisher is in the shortest format of the game.

With the rise of the T20 format, teams gradually began to recruit more and more role specialists, targeting players with specific skills for particular periods of play. For example, there is often a high-level anchor , a mid-level slogger, a death bowler, a mystery spinner, and more. Perhaps the role that has received the most attention is that of a finisher who is usually given the duty of winning his team matches in the final overs during critical situations.

The term is widely used for hard-hitting batsmen who take the crease after 15 and hit over 180 to take their teams to seemingly impossible totals. However, former India flyhalf and renowned commentator Kris Srikkanth questioned this definition of the term, stating that anyone who comes in the middle and carries their bat to the end while taking their team to the checkered flag should be considered like a finisher,

“What do you mean by a finisher? In my book, the finisher is the guy who can take the stick from 8th or 12th and win the game for India. He starts at 8th or 6th, but where is the good finisher?” it was reported by Hindustan Times.

The legendary figure included openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma as finishers even if they open, stating that playing only five overs, in the end, does not qualify a player as a finisher.

“KL Rahul is a good finisher. Rohit Sharma is a good finisher. They are also opening. I just can’t say you beat the last 5 overs and say he’s a finisher.

When it comes to the Indian team, the conventional role of a finisher currently resides with Dinesh Karthik who was specially contracted to play the last four overs of India’s batting innings. That doesn’t mean India lack firepower in the roster around them, with the likes of Hardik Pandya, Rishab Panting and Suryakumar Yadav all capable of getting enthusiastic and hitting over 12 points. Srikkanth said he believes Men in Blue’s entire mid-level hitting group is good enough to finish games, even if they come into the game much earlier than a typical finisher should.

“I would call Dinesh Karthik a good finisher, but the real finishers are guys like Suryakumar Yadav. He’s a brilliant finisher. You’ve got Rishabh Pant, who’s a brilliant finisher. You’ve got Hardik Pandya, who’s also a brilliant finisher I think I would clarify that a finisher is a guy who takes the team from 8th over and continues to 20th over,” the 62-year-old concluded on the matter.
