Conor McGregor tipped to reclaim UFC lightweight title from Charles Oliveira – but Michael Bisping insists Nate Diaz trilogy fight should be next

UFC legend Michael Bisping thinks Conor McGregor could snatch the lightweight title from Charles Oliveira – but urges the Irishman to fight Nate Diaz next.

“Notorious,” 33, has been out of the Octagon since breaking his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

McGregor expected to resume operations in 2022

After accelerating his recovery, McGregor is believed to be targeting a return to MMA this summer – and Bisping suggests a trilogy fight with Diaz would be his best option.

The pair had two classic fights, picking up a win each, as both have struggled for wins since last meeting in 2016.

When asked who McGregor should fight next, former UFC champion Bisping told talkSPORT: “Probably Nate Diaz. That should be the fight. Nate only has one fight on the contract, stylistically it’s a great fight.

“Nate Diaz is as tough as they come. Conor had two great fights with him. They’re one each. That makes sense.

“If I was running the company, I would want to do this fight because it’s going to be huge numbers. Conor always does massive numbers anyway, but the trilogy with Diaz, that has to be it.

Oliveira is defending his lightweight title against Justin Gaethje in May – and McGregor has suggested he could challenge for the belt if the Brazilian waits.

The former two-weight champion said in February: “Maybe if your man [Oliveira] is wise, he might give it another month or two.

“July seems OK to me. I can’t say too soon. But July, if I train in April, May, June, July, I could slap most of these guys by the end of April, you know what I’m saying? A fight could be a fight.

Questions linger over McGregor’s place among today’s MMA elite after three losses in his last four fights.

He claimed to weigh 190 pounds in December, which puts him in the light-heavyweight division and 35 pounds too heavy for a lightweight bout, as things stand.

But Bisping gives the Irishman a good shot at reclaiming the title if he cuts back and fights Oliveira.

Bisping added: “Now they’re talking about Conor fighting Oliviera for the belt, which again to a lot of purists might sound crazy, but if I’m the owner of the company and want to take a relationship ride I might say ‘well he just lost to Poirier and he was next for the belt, so now that means he’s next’ – that’s not the case. But, that’s how you could spin it.

“Conor is exciting and if you have that at your disposal you want to take advantage of it and I know in the real essence of the sport it does not really work, but there is also an entertainment factor and people want to see Conor to fight. .

“I tell you, the top five is tough for Conor. But Oliveira is very capable of hitting. He gets hit and Conor can punch. So it sounds crazy, but we could see Conor come back, fight Oliveira and win the belt.

“The only problem is that he has to slim down because right now he looks very bulky. Lots of encores and tris in the beach workouts! I’m definitely skipping the day of leg [laughs].

“It must be Diaz, but he might not want it. Diaz said Conor had work to do, he had fights to win. They’re both crazy, they’re both delusional!

“If you look at their records, there are a lot of reds lately! Not too many greens! But it’s okay, they’re the best in the world [laughs]. No, but they are good, of course.
