Conor McGregor celebrates new UFC champ Jiri Prochazka after missing Kamaru Usman title fight with Leon Edwards to challenge for welterweight belt

After months of speculation, it has finally been confirmed that UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will defend his title against British fighter Leon Edwards.

The fight, which takes place at UFC 278 on August 20 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, ends any hopes of Conor McGregor securing a welterweight title upon his return from injury.

“Notorious” suffered a fractured tibia and fibula at UFC 264 in July 2021 but is now closing in on a return to action and has stepped up his training sessions in recent weeks.

The 33-year-old has publicly called for a fight with Usman despite the fact that he has no real welterweight history, is on a two-fight losing streak and has just suffered a serious injury.

At one point, it looked like a fight between Usman and McGregor might actually happen.

Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen claims Edwards was offered money to give up his title shot and allow ‘Mystic Mac’ to skip the line.

Englishman Edwards responded to the rumour, tweeting: ‘Chael, what the hell are you doing?

‘The American Gangster’ was a long way off as Edwards finally has a date for his overdue title fight.

And McGregor is lined up for a fight with Michael Chandler following his epic knockout win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 274 last month.

The former two-weight champion doesn’t seem bothered to have missed out on a shot and a third UFC title and instead intends to celebrate the new UFC champion.

Jiri Prochazka clinched the light heavyweight title with a last minute win over Glover Teixeira last night at UFC 275 and McGregor couldn’t be happier for him as they share the same management company.

“Paradigm’s Sports NEWEST! And Czech Republic’s FIRST! UFC World Champion! Indomitable Samurai, Jiri Prochazka! What a fight! What a performance! Thumbs up,” McGregor wrote on social media.
