CONMEBOL suspend officials after failing to issue a red card to former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi for nudging Leeds United star Raphinha

CONMEBOL suspended two officials following Brazil’s match against Argentina in which Nicolas Otamendi did not receive a red card for nudging Raphinha.

The governing body said referee Andres Cunha and video assistant Esteban Ostojich made “a serious mistake” and will now not take over a match for an “indefinite” period.

Otamendi clearly moved his elbow to Raphinha’s face, but the referee ruled it was not a red card.

The first-half incident between fierce rivals Brazil and Argentina saw the former Manchester City defender successfully take the ball away from Raphinha.

As he tried to get away from the Leeds United man, the 33-year-old appeared to take a quick glance at the Brazilian winger before slapping him in the face with his arm.

Otamendi, whose actions bloodied Raphinha, was fortunate to stay on the pitch, despite using VAR.

Staying on the pitch, he helped his side secure a 0-0 draw that saw Argentina advance to the World Cup.
